General Questions

What is DPC?
Direct primary care, or DPC, is a model of healthcare that puts patients first by offering increased patient care access, availability, and affordability. This means treating patients when they need it, never rushing them through appointments, and being proactive with their healthcare treatment plans. Direct primary care clinics don’t accept insurance; they work directly with the patient, providing wholesale labs, deeply discounted prescription prices, and other costs savings along the way.
Is concierge medicine the same as direct primary care?

Concierge medicine and direct primary care essentially represent the same principles and are often used interchangeably. However, direct primary care provides a more cost effective solution to care and does not seek reimbursement from your insurance company.

The first of its kind in Brevard county, Island Direct Primary Care offers an innovative approach to family healthcare that is personal, accessible, comprehensive, specific, and easily affordable. In other words, we provide care at the right time, at the right place, and for the right price.
What sets Island Direct Primary Care apart from other practices?

How can you guarantee same or next-day appointments?

Managed care has driven modern era physicians, with traditional primary care practices, to accept anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 patients, or more. Long wait times for appointments and very little time with providers has become the norm. Dr. John APRN plans to accept only 600 patients. Island Direct Primary Care will keep patient numbers low in order to get patients in quickly and spend ample time with them once there. We offer our patients the same kind of accessibility and attention that we would want for ourselves and our families.

Are home visits an option?
Yes! There are times when a home visit is the best answer, and direct primary care affords family providers the time to get out of the office when necessary, just like in the good old days. Obviously if we are driving, we can’t be caring for people, so home visits are limited to those who live within 30 minutes of the practice. Island Direct Primary Care is enabled to provide home visits to the greatest number of patients possible by utilizing geospatial technologies to coordinate drive times and locations. There is no additional charge for home visits.
Will I benefit from Island Direct Primary Care if I don’t require frequent medical attention?
Of course. We might argue that everyone benefits from a service that is tailored directly to them; that’s why we offer truly custom healthcare. Island Direct Primary Care partners with you to maintain, even enhance, your good health. Of course, we’re here for you in sickness, but proactive healthcare is important, and we’re here for that too.

Every visit with Island Direct Primary Care, for whatever reason, will be absolutely thorough and yet, unhurried. You will have all of the time you want and need to ask questions and to feel confident that you understand all that has been discussed with you. As months and years go by, the relationship we build with you will continue to grow and flourish, as will our comprehension of your individual wellness needs.

Does Island Direct Primary Care accept health insurance?
Happily, no. Perhaps the most critical distinction in our model of care centers on a direct, personal relationship between you and your provider That directness carries over to our business model. While the tender mercies of an insurance company might apply to the fixing of a damaged fender on your automobile, we see no reason for any insurer to have a voice about either the quality or the cost of your family’s care. Additionally, this direct fee-for-services arrangement frees us from the typical contractual agreements that prevent providers from offering wholesale prices on laboratory tests, imaging, and medications.
As a patient of Island Direct Primary Care, will I still need health insurance?
Yes. We recommend our patients acquire, or continue with, a high deductible major medical plan and health savings account to ensure the necessary financial resources should hospitalization or referral to a specialist be necessary. Can you help me find affordable insurance for my family or my business?
Absolutely! We’re fortunate to work with leaders in the health insurance industry who build custom plans, plans that remove much of the waste and inefficiency from a typical, bloated policy. If I have Medicare, Medicaid or Federal Healthcare Plan, can I still join Island Direct Primary Care?
No. Unfortunately there are strict covenants that govern your healthcare. However, Island Direct Primary Care continually monitors legislative proposals and will modify membership accordingly when applicable proposals become law.
Is my Island Direct Primary Care membership tax deductible?
Unfortunately, no. Your membership is not yet defined as a “medical expense” in most states and as such is not deductible. Please confer with a tax consultant for further clarification as applies to your individual circumstances.
Can my fees be reimbursed by my insurance company?
Some insurance companies will allow submission of receipts for your membership fees, lab expenses, and/or medication costs to be applied towards your deductible. Refer to your insurance policy for verification of eligibility.
What happens if I need to go to the hospital or see a specialist?
While Island Direct Primary Care seeks to prevent or reduce hospitalizations and specialty referrals with unprecedented access and proactive care, we are aware that there will be times when specialty care is required. We will work closely with your specialist and/or hospitalist during these times. Depending on the level of care and type of expertise required, we may even rely on specialized caregivers to manage your treatment.

Specialist visits and hospitalization are not covered by your Island Direct Primary Care membership. These expenses are best managed with a high deductible major medical insurance plan and health savings account. Click here for insurance agent referrals.

Can children become members of Island Direct Primary Care?
Yes. Island Direct Primary Care is happy to accept for membership the biological and adopted children of our enrolled clients from birth to 19 years of age. We are not currently able to provide routine vaccinations for children; however, we will happily refer you to alternate resources.
Can I contact my provider after hours? And how?
Absolutely! Because illness and injury do not respect regular office hours, you may call, text, email or otherwise message your provider any day, at any hour. Schedules permitting, home visits can even be arranged. You may also use the Island Direct Primary Care secure patient portal to access your medical records. This is what we mean by unprecedented access.
What if I need medical attention while I’m away from home?
Island Direct Primary Care provides care to our patients from both near and far. Freedom from the restrictions of insurance companies and intimate knowledge of you and your family, allows us to streamline your care when you’re sick and away from home. Many illnesses can be diagnosed, and the appropriate treatment conveyed, with a simple conversation by phone, email, text or webcam. We’ll even locate the nearest pharmacy and call in appropriate prescriptions as necessary.
Are my medical records ever shared with insurance carriers or pharmaceutical companies?
Scrupulous standards of privacy are maintained by Island Direct Primary Care. We never provide any third party with your medical information or records unless you specifically ask to do so.
How will I know if the providers of Island Direct Primary Care are right for me?

Are there any medications that Island Direct Primary Care does not prescribe or illnesses that are not treated?
Island Direct Primary Care does not accept new patients for the treatment of chronic pain with narcotic pain medications. Patients with chronic pain are encouraged to seek care from a pain management specialist. Neither do we prescribe controlled sedatives (benzodiazepines) for treatment of chronic anxiety. Patients with chronic anxiety requiring sedatives are encouraged to be cared for by a psychiatrist. What if I decide to cancel?
We expect to have an open, honest, respectful relationship with you. If you have voiced a complaint that we cannot satisfy together, we will certainly allow you to terminate your membership. Please click here to reference the Island Direct Primary Care Membership Agreement for full details.
